Sunday Night DVD Blogging w/Poll

Sun Jun 10, 2007 at 05:02:14 PM PDT

Ah, someting a little bit less controversial!  I end up watching movies that have either religious or philisophical content (ie, no 40 Year Old Virgin for me).  This does not mean that I don't watch the blockbusters, etc., but it seems that the ones I go back to over and over are the ones that may be a bit deeper than, say, Independence Day.

Movies and Holidays: A Cooperative Effort

Sun Sep 03, 2006 at 08:04:52 AM PDT

This diversion had its genesis last July 14th when I decided that, for Bastille Day, I needed to go get the DVD of Casablanca (the Marseillaise scene). This Labor Day weekend it rears up again.

There are a few movies associated with particular holidays through television tradition: in particular, It's a Wonderful Life and Christmas. But those of us who have favorite classic movies can now take advantage of DVDs and establish yearly customs of our own choosing.

What movies deserve yearly viewing, on what days? I have a few suggestions below, very incomplete. I'm eager to hear ideas from the community on both choices of movies and choices of days.

Fair use under attack.....

Fri Aug 25, 2006 at 07:22:18 PM PDT

So what can one do?  You take your legal copy of whatever that you paid $17.99 for and don't want to risk having taken from your vehicle and now the government does this.  So how does this differ from fair use in the past?   It does not!

Police property: It’s finders keepers in NH

"The state Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the government can keep and destroy more than 500 CDs taken from Michael Cohen, owner of Pitchfork Records in Concord, in 2003 even though the state failed to prove that a single disk was illegal."

Al Gore says see The Real Dirt on Farmer John

Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 02:57:10 PM PDT

Al Gore at the Castro

Before Al Gore had his own documentary, he was a judge at a film festival in Nashville.  He liked the winning film, The Real Dirt on Farmer John so much, he gave Farmer John a tour of his own farm at introduced the film in San Francisco.

You can see it tonight, Tuesday, June 13th on many PBS stations (check local listings on this site which also has more on the show) as part of Independent Lens.

Brokeback Mountain DVD thread

Tue Apr 04, 2006 at 09:16:34 AM PDT

The movie that should have won best picture comes out on DVD today. Bitch Ph.D. has an excellent analysis of this movie (my wife immediately picked up on this same thing, which I didn't really think about when seeing the film):

Brokeback, like every other Western out there, is about the suppression of male emotion for the greater social need...

Ennis has a committment to honor. His personal feeling violates not only his promise (he's engaged) but also all established social norms. The scene where Alma finds out about his relationship with Jack is such a huge deal, arguably central to the film, b/c it shows the problem: it's not just about homophobia (or else Ennis would just be a pure victim), it's about this kind of masculine responsibility where his personal needs and feelings have to be suppressed because, damnit, he has responsibilities. That's why his reconciliation with Alma Jr. at the end is so vitally important.

more, plus poll after the break...

Rewatch History and Timeless Movies

Sat Mar 04, 2006 at 10:56:38 PM PDT

I watch the History channel, but if you don't, great credible documentaries and movies are available for sale, on DVD in stores or NetFlix.

I just re-watched Moore's Farenheit 911; and watched Enron story: Smartest Guys in the Room; and Network;  All the Presidents' Men; Lawrence of Arabia; Walmart Story; Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now; Pork Chop HIll;  Saving Private Ryan; and just for drill a bunch of old 50 and 60s TV westerns.

We didn't need this Iraq war.  It was by choice.   Diplomacy wasn't given full reign.  Our boomer President mentally plays Cowboys and Indians. That's Black and White thinking.  He's still stuck in the Happy Days 50s, of BW TV.

Wal-Mart DVD - How are you helping spread the word?

Wed Nov 23, 2005 at 11:47:34 AM PDT

Have you bought your copy of the Wal-Mart DVD?

Just as I suspected would happen seems to be happening.  So much attention was given to the "viewing parties" that the sales are not what they could be.

Many of us may have seen this documentry at a viewing party. How are you going to keep spreading the word unless you can loan your copy of the DVD to a reluctant friend who maybe shops wal-mart and will not buy the DVD?  How can you show it to your friends and family if you do not own a copy yourself?

The independant record and video stores that put on a big big push for this DVD (ads on Air America Radio, etc.) are not getting the sales that they expected and may not put any effort into pushing a documentry like this ever again.

Please help keep this Wal-Mart DVD in the spot light and help spread the word.  Buy yourself or someone else a copy for christmas, thanksgiving or just because you should.

Buy from a local independant, support the little guys.

 Thank you,

  Kevin

UPDATE: Wal-Mart DVD - Please help make this BIG!

Mon Nov 14, 2005 at 11:15:39 PM PDT

Tuesday the 15th is the BIG day for the retail release of the Wal-Mart DVD!  Please work to make this a BIG seller!  PLEASE support your local retailer... the little guys!

In the Seattle area there will be a big Air America Radio push on AM1090 to get your copy of the Wal-Mart DVD at Easy Street Records and Scarecrow Video.
